Let's go!

According to government figures, Electric Vehicle (EV) registrations saw an increase up to 327,000 last year.  With the government committed to phasing out all new sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, this number is likely to increase rapidly!

To meet the increasing demand for charging, 300,000 public charge points are expected to be put in place by 2030.  That’s the equivalent of five times the number of our current conventional fuel pumps.   Whilst reassuring, as more of us make the shift to choosing an EV, many people will have questions about battery life.

The good news is EV batteries usually last around 10 years or 100,000 miles (similar to a conversion fuel car) and according to the RAC most come with a warranty of around 8 years. However, as with most electronic items, over time EVs will experience battery degradation.  So, is there anything we can do to optimise battery life?

4 tips for preserving battery life:

  • Charging levels: Avoid fully charging or fully depleting your battery and aim for a range of 20% to 80% instead. If you are keeping your EV for local or only occasional use, aim for 50% charge for better battery health
  • Extreme temperatures: Avoid extreme temperatures if possible. Your EV has an automated temperature control system installed and will needlessly drain your batteries to keep the temperatures down for optimal efficiency.  This also applies to when parked to charge for maximum battery health.
  • Rapid charging: Whilst useful for longer trips and saving charging times significantly, rapid charging puts extra pressure on your EV batteries and causes them to wane overtime.
  • Acceleration: If you are prone to driving using aggressive acceleration, this will have an impact on your range and battery wear.
